Yet he knows nothing of the management of Miamis. Owing to my being unwell as I before informed you, prevented me noticing your reply to me, on the subject of a letter of Tho&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;s&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt; Dowling Esq respecting the Miami emigration. I fear Mr Dowling  has not fully understood the Indians, that I may not been particular as explaining their reply of which I took a note at the time. I may also be misunderstood by you. During the numerous counsels, I urged the necessity of removal next spring. They would not commit,  at the last talk we had. They replied they would go next fall if I had not the power to permit them to remain for a month longer, if I had not to write to them Great Father at Washington making that urgent if he did not grant it. Send for them our [illegible] as answer, that they would meet me and do as the Great Father wished, meaning that they would go next fall. I looked upon this reply of the Miamis [illegible]. Knowing their unwilling=ness to leave their nature [native woods?], the graves of their fathers and emigrate to a new country. Since I wrote you on the subject of  permission to expense a small sum in feeding the Miamis. When called together for counsel on the subject of removal - I &amp;lt;s&amp;gt;some&amp;lt;/s&amp;gt; saw some the chiefs the [illegible] chief Lafontaine seemed favorably disposed towards that object, agreeing with me in to the necessity of an early emigration on account of the Indians themselves The other chiefs with whom [I conversed?] were not so favorable to an early time of departure. None seemed willing to commit themselves, desiring to comsult the tribe. [I hoped?] can then to receive your permission to call them together. To communicate my [illegible] from the department, in counsel to them. A publication in the Indianapolis news papers copied in those published around us, of the contract of Mr. Dowling for removal of the tribe which &amp;lt;s&amp;gt;was&amp;lt;/s&amp;gt; much exagerated, the transaction; caused the traders in opposition alledging as I understand many things against the mode of removal. During the numerous counsels, I urged the necessity of removal next spring. They would not commit,  at the last talk we had.
