In a conversation yesterday you mentioned the four thousand dollars  be furnished to the Miamis in pork and flour The year of their [illegible] west of the Mississippi to be Taken out of their annuity for that year: enquiring will it be deducted from the amount  to be given to those migratory or from the amount for the whole tribe . At the time that provision was inserted in the treaty of 1840.  The late Chief Richardville gave us a reason that the improvements to be made  west must not be sufficient to make the Miamies to [raise corn?] sufficient for support, that part of the tribe remains under treaty stipulations, had  improvements,  [illegible] land holders  - What he [illegible] is the sum of four thousand dollars taken out of the general annuity and paid out in pork and flour to be furnished to that part the tribe moving  west. This was fully understood    at the time by the contract.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

When at Washington city, I [illegible, very light] recommending the immediate removal of a few of the Wea tribe, still living in the Wabash. I have [illegible] through [illegible] Ewing [illegible] to be informed of [illegible] a branch of the Miamis. I am [illegible] informed believe they are. On the emigration of the Weas to their present country, this remnant of that tribe, remaining with the Thorn town Owing to a large part of the Miami tribe not being present at the treaty made by Genl. Tipton in 1827 or 1828- for the cession of the [Thorn town&#039;s?] reserve as it was eating [acting?] and feeling unsatisfied [?], with the transfer of that reserve without the consent of the whole Miami tribe. They afterwards [illegible] their words[?] from a participation in the Miami annuity. This [illegible] party counts principally of women &amp;amp; children in great parity, without the means of subsistence during the ensuing winter. I have the honor to enclose herewith a letter of addressed to me by Robt. Peebles Esq. giving notice that he has sold the interest he held in the Contract for the removal and subsistence of the Miamis.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Mr. Coquillard  the active partner of them now interested in the Contract is busily engaged in making preparations for  the emigration he designs keeping the Indians together when they are assembled for the purpose of having an examination of their debts and as soon as possible put them under motion. If he succeeds the emigration will be effected early in the season.&lt;br /&gt;

Since uniting the above, it is suggested by the Commissioner that the Company had better be ordered to Peru, Indiana near the Indian Territory and in the neighborhood of the Indians to be removed, which, I understand, is about sixty miles from Fort Wayne, the residence of the Agent who will be instructed to meet the Commanding officer of the troops at Peru. -&lt;br /&gt;

You will see from the communication (of the commissioners) of Indian Affairs to the Secretary of War, of this date, a copy of which is herewith enclosed, that the presence of a small military force is called for at Fort Wayne, Indiana to insure the harmless and peaceful removal of the Miamia Indians to their new homes West of the Mississippi, under treaty stipulations. For this purpose, you will please to organize, arm and equip the permanent party at Newport Barracks, with the adoption of such good recruits as well bring up the number of privates to sixty-four, with orders to the Commanding officer to proceed forthwith to Fort Wayne, and on his arrival see Mr. Sinclear, the Agent with whom he will freely communicate, and co-operate, in the excemtion of his instructions, received from the War Department relative to the removal of the said Indians. &lt;br /&gt;

Captain Jouett, 1st Infantry, recruiting at Louisville, Ky, has been ordered to report to you for the command of the  Company, to which you will place to assign an experienced subaltern. One of our best arguments in inducing them all to sell &amp;amp; leave their splendid lands in Indiana, and move away , was that they could get out of reach of liquor which was destroying them so rapidly.&lt;br /&gt;

I am sorry to see that their condition will be in no wise improved if located as at present they are to be on the very edge of the state of Mo. where they will be confronted with a line of whiskey shops, Groceries and [Duggeries?] immediately along that line for twenty five miles in length. Many of those despicable rascals are already stationed along there in advance anxiously awaiting the arrival of their victims - The Miaimes are dreadfully intemperate.--&lt;br /&gt;

To facilitate the removal let this agent be directed to advise them &amp;lt;u&amp;gt;formally,&amp;lt;/u&amp;gt; that no more, nor no part of their annuity will be paid either to them who are to move, nor to them who by treaty stipulations remain in Indiana, until the emigration actually takes place.&lt;br /&gt;
The Agent should cause  Rolls to be made,  to name and determine &amp;lt;u&amp;gt;all&amp;lt;/u&amp;gt; those belonging to the Richardville family-- the Godfroy families, the Bands of Meshin-g0-me-shaw, and Brothers, and the old white woman, Frances Slocum and her family. These people are all by treaty stipulations and by law entitled to remain in Indiana &amp;amp; to draw their share of the annuity there. Therefore they should be particularly designated and separated from the others, who are bound by treaty stipulation, to move away this spring. &lt;br /&gt;
I may (presuming it may not be offensive to the Dept), say to those people, that if they will move when they get out there in their new lands on the Osage river, if it does not suit them they can most likely upon petition and request get the permission to exchange it with the government. for other land up on the Kanzas river or else where.&lt;br /&gt;

I will be governed by the anxiety expressed in your letter for the early removal of that tribe, in accordance with my duty as contractor. All the necessary arrangements are made for that purpose, and the emigration will proceed so soon as the season will permit- not later, it is hoped, than May.  An earlier movement would not be prudent owing to the variable character of our early spring months.&lt;br /&gt;

I have had the honor to receive your letter of the  7th in relation to the emigration of the Miamis and have called upon the chiefs &amp;amp; head men of the tribe to meet me in council at the forks of the Wabash on Saturday of this week, when I shall urge upon them a compliance with the treaty stipulations with the Government.&lt;br /&gt;
Your remarks on the subject of the contract that received the sanction of the President last winter have been and will continue to be of very great service to me and by holding that matter suspended I shall be able to secure the aid of those interested in removing the Indians. If the necessary receipts should be tendered, I hope that matter will not be consummated at present. &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
I have not much hope of success for Mr French, as amongst the runaways are those who were concerned in the murders that were committed last summer and the year before on the Mississeneway, and on that account have for a long time avoided meeting with the residue of the tribe. If they choose to go with the Pot-a-wat-i-mies and are received by them I think it would be much better to let them remain there than to throw them again with the Miamies . &lt;br /&gt;

29th Ultimo; just received from the Hon. A.W.  Morris of the &lt;br /&gt;
Indiana Legislature, and other Correspondence with this office, that &lt;br /&gt;
it is of the highest importance for the interest of that state that &lt;br /&gt;
the late cession of the residue of the &amp;quot;Big Miami reserve&amp;quot; (see Miami &lt;br /&gt;
treaty concluded 28th of November 1840) should be surveyed in &lt;br /&gt;
order that the authorities of the state may complete the canal selections. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I Therefore beg leave to invite your attention to the stipulation &lt;br /&gt;
contained in the 8th article of the treaty in the following words &amp;quot;that the Miami tribe of Indians shall remove to the country assigned them west of the Mississippi within five years from this &lt;br /&gt;
date&amp;quot; and have to request information as to what steps, if any, &lt;br /&gt;
have been taken by your Department for the removal of said &lt;br /&gt;
Indians west, and of the probable time that the removal will be &lt;br /&gt;
