In reply to the within inquiry, we have to say, that we have no recollection of any of the contractors permitting Indians to remain for the purpose of gathering their crops, and then go West; we think no such promise was made, or we should have heard of it. We fell assured that Major Jouett, at whose instance we attended to aid in the removal, never made such a promise, for we at all times fully communicated with him--In reply to the latter enquiry, asking our opinion as to the due diligence of the contractors to get the Indians off we hesistate not in saying, that from the time we arrived at Peru until the departure of the tribe West the contractors did all they could to remove every Indian of the tribe they possibly could get to go.
