Since my [morning's?] conversation with you. I have read a letter from the west in which is is stated, in speaking of the approaching emigration of the Miamis, that "Col. Madill has written back to Sinclair threatening to use force." I trust my information is not correct. I know that you have repeatedly said no force ^ <sup>should be used</sup> in the emigration of those people + I know know farther the the threat to use it can do no good. They are alarmed at such threat, which has even now been made + will not assemble in camps, in any number Much more can be done by <u>coaxing</u> than attempting to <u>drive</u> them. Trouble , if not blood shed will surely result from the latter. Why is it that they resist be treated like dogs? Cannot the common feelings of humanity be exercised in their behalf? After having been defrauded & [illeg] upon for half a century by individuals & Gov. must the poor [remnant now?] left be driven to desperation by the very power to which they look for protection?
