Fort Wayne Inda <br> Feb 22, 1847<br> Hon Wm Medill Comr of Indian Affairs Washington City Sir, <br> Mr. Alexis Coquillard informs us that he has applied through the Hon. C.W. Cathcart for a contract for the removal of the residue of the Pottawatomie, Ottaway, and Chippeway Indians, stipulated to be removed in the 2d Art: of the Treaty made at Chicago on the 26th Sept 1833. Mr. Coquillard is the old Trader of these people, & could [more?] successfully than any man we know of, collect them together and remove them west; now that the government has secured a country on the Kanzas for their final and permanent home. Mr. Coquillard has been settling up the details of the late Miami Emigration with us, and we are highly pleased with his conduct throughout; it is honest, honorable, and energetic, & so far as we have learnt, satisfactory to the INdians--he is very kind, and humane to these poor people; is well acquainted with all their wants, and will work harder, and give himselve more trouble to oblige them, and minister to their wants, than any man we have ever seen amongst them. Shoudl the Hon. Indian Department see proper to give a contract to Mr. Coquillard for the removal of these people (he thinks from 4 to 600) the Firm of Ewing Chute [illeg] of this place will assist him to procure funds, and provide the means for its prompt, satisfactory, and successful execution, & will sign bonds for its performance & faithful fulfillment.
