Since I wrote you on the subject of permission to expense a small sum in feeding the Miamis. When called together for counsel on the subject of removal - I some saw some the chiefs the principal chief Lafontaine seemed favorably disposed towards that object, agreeing with me in to the necessity of an early emigration on account of the Indians themselves. The other chiefs with whom I conversed were not so favorable to an early time of departure. None seemed willing to commit themselves, desiring to consult the tribe. [I hoped?] can then to receive your permission to call them together, to communicate my instructions from the department, in counsel to them. A publication in the Indianapolis news papers copied in those published around us, of the contract of Mr. Dowling for removal of the tribe which was much exagerated, the transaction; aroused the traders in opposition, alledging as I understand many things against the mode of removal.
