a different course adopted toward their people from the [illegible] which this threat of "force" would indicate. I cannot but trust that you have never authorized such threats. + [illegible] that they have not been used. Certain I am that their use will destroy all the good intentions of the Indians and that what might have efforted peacably by persuasion + reason will under such threats not be efforted as all [illegible] at all, with great trouble + [illegible].
